This is the Moffat we all know and love!! The second episode of season 9 of the BBC show Doctor Who was much better that the first. It was a great conclusion to a 2 part “episode”. Peter Capaldi (World War Z) and Jenna Coleman (Captain America: The First Avenger) return as The Doctor and Clara, with Michelle Gomez (The Acid House) as Missy.
“The Witch’s Familiar” was written by Steven Moffat (Sherlock), who made us all remember why we love his writing so much, after a less than perfect season premier. This episode brought back the elements of Doctor Who that so many fans have come to love. Parts of it were very unexpected, and very different than what I thought would happen. I knew that Moffat wouldn’t follow through with how he ended the last episode, and he found an interesting way to make it work.
Capaldi and Coleman were phenomenal and made me fall in love with the characters even more. Capaldi’s performance made me feel for the character, and showed a diverse range of emotions.
Now for the fangirl review… SPOILERS ALERT!!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!
I really enjoyed this episode. There were a lot of plot points that I didn’t expect, and I was fascinated by the way this played out. Here are my top 5 moments from the episode:
5.Missy explains how she and Clara are alive while Clara hangs upside down
4.The Doctor sits in Davros’ chair
3.Davros and The Doctor have a heart-to-heart (even if Davros was faking it the whole time)
2.Clara in the Dalek
1.Davros tricks The Doctor into giving him regeneration power/ creates Dalek-Timelord hybrids
I think that Moffat wasted a really good opportunity with Clara as a dalek. I thought that Clara somewhat remembered her other lives. This would have been a great character moment if Moffat had related it to when we first met Coleman in the season 7 premiere episode “The Dalek Asylum?” as Oswin Oswald.
The conversation that Davros and The Doctor had was emotional and I think Davros was actually crying at one point. I’m not entirely sure how The Doctor knew Davros’ plan, but I guess he did and used it to his advantage.
I liked Missy as a character, up until the point when she tried to trick The Doctor into killing Clara. YOU CAN’T DO THAT!!! I was not happy with her for trying to kill off my favorite character. It really showed just how evil she is. She doesn’t care about how her actions affect other people.
I’m still on the fence about the sonic sunglasses. It is kind of a stupid idea, but maybe I’ll come to like it. Who knows.
